Abstract/summary:

My article will examine the context and negotiations surrounding the Paris Treaty of November 9, 1920, which formalized the relations between Poland and the Free City of Danzig within the framework of the Versailles Treaty. The mutual mistrust and acrimony in which the treaty was drafted led to points of ongoing disagreement that characterized Poland and Danzig’s relationship through the latter’s entire existence. Two components of the treaty will be focused on here: the conduct of Danzig’s foreign relations and the Poland/Danzig customs union. My article draws upon drafting documents, League of Nations correspondence, and contemporary press accounts to demonstrate how the troubled beginnings of the Free City of Danzig would in time lead to a total breakdown in relations with Poland.
